I've been trying to do this, HIIT on the bike, followed shortly after by weight training (experimenting w/ GVT). Personally, since I don't have great endurance b/c I don't do cardio, its not been working for me since I feel worn out by the HIIT that it I don't lift as effectively. Perhaps its something you just have to experiment with, and build up to.

Perhaps its something you just have to experiment with, and build up to. However, my legs feel like I get more of a workout than when I do squats.
