1 minute on 2 minutes off, you want to do burst but give it just enough time to do it again, 4 minutes based on a minute burst is to long of a rest period therefor kills the principle of doing HIIT in the first place

Usually HIIT is something like 5 minute warmup, 30 second bursts, 1:30 munites slow. Doing these intervals for the next 20 minutes. Finishing with 5 minute cooldown. While wearing a heart rate strap. The warmup/cooldown is around 60% of your max. While the 30 second burst gets your heart rate at/around 80/85% of your max. As your conditioning gets beter your bursts will always be 30 seconds, but your 1:30 will start to move to 1 min, and then finally 30/30 bursts and slower. Hope this hepls...
